Tinnitus is the term used to describe the condition of having ringing, buzzing, or noise in the ear or originating from the head. There may be many reasons why many hearing aid candidates with tinnitus remain untreated. If your general well being is in good shape, that will likely make it easier to cope with your tinnitus. The aim was twofold: to increase awareness of the possibilities of alleviating the effects of tinnitus by means of the Zen feature and/or amplification, and to entice potential hearing aid users to seek treatment for their hearing loss. There is at present no proven advantage to using these devices rather than simple hearing aids.
There has been evidence to suggest hearing aids can improve communication and reduce anxiety levels by ‘œmasking’ tinnitus with therapeutic sounds, which can exacerbate tinnitus. Tinnitus can originate in the middle ear (behind the eardrum) or in the sensorineural auditory system. Some remedies can be used to suppress load roaring noises, echoing, dull humming and other tinnitus symptoms.

The majority of patients with tinnitus receive partial or complete relief from their tinnitus with the use of hearing aids.
Audiologists play a key role in performing audiologic assessment, providing treatment for hearing loss (if appropriate) and determining the impact of the tinnitus on the patient. In two small trials, rTMS compared with a sham procedure helped improve the perception of tinnitus in a few patients. Zen programs are based upon each patient’s hearing loss and the frequencies of their tinnitus to ensure adequate amplification and masking. Wearing a hearing aid makes it easier for some people to hear the sounds they need to hear by making them louder. Eye glass lenses are ground to a specific prescription, but hearing aid wearers are getting ‘one-size-fits-all” like socks. This form of tinnitus therapy helps retrain your brain to turn down” the volume of your tinnitus symptoms during everyday life.
Wearable sound generators are small electronic devices that fit in the ear and use a soft, pleasant sound to help mask the tinnitus. The use of an externally produced sound to either cover up or in some way inhibit or alter production of tinnitus can offer relief for some. Most people with tinnitus also have a hearing loss, and it is not always easy to tell whether hearing difficulties are due to the hearing loss or to the tinnitus. Members of the group share strategies they have found successful in dealing with their tinnitus.
The use of hearing aids improves communication, reduces the stress associated with intensive listening, and also can partially mask the tinnitus. Of the roughly 200 hearing-impaired persons included in the trial, 50% did not own hearing aids. This treatment is clinically proven to offer long-term significant relief from tinnitus. Yet, more than a third (39%) of people with hearing loss do not seek help specifically because they have tinnitus. The characteristics of the tinnitus (pitch, loudness, location, etc.) that you describe for the audiologist determine what kind of masking noise might bring relief. The very high correlation between stress and tinnitus disturbance underscores the need to maintain one’s composure and logic when trying to cope with tinnitus. Perhaps 5% of tinnitus is caused by a jaw joint (TMJ) problem which is treatable.
